Flush Stone Setting Workshop: October 18 from 10:00-5:30

Learn one of the most elegant and versatile stone-setting techniques in jewelry making. Our Flush Stone Setting Workshop teaches you how to securely set faceted gemstones so they sit level with the surface of the metal, creating clean, modern designs with brilliant flashes of color.

Designed for those who have taken Beginning Metalsmithing or Metals 1 and 2 (or have equivalent experience), this hands-on workshop focuses on the essential skills needed to confidently flush set round faceted stones in sterling silver. You'll learn professional techniques for creating crisp, secure settings while minimizing cleanup and achieving a polished finish.

Throughout the day, you'll gain experience setting stones on a curved surface while learning how proper planning, tool preparation, and precision drilling contribute to successful results.

This workshop covers the complete flush-setting process, including:

• Making specialized flush-setting tools
• Planning stone placement and design layout
• Measuring stones and selecting the correct setting burs
• Precision drilling techniques
• Preparing seats for faceted gemstones
• Flush setting round faceted stones
• Setting stones on a curved surface
• Professional cleanup and finishing techniques

By the end of class, you'll have the confidence and technical skills to incorporate flush-set gemstones into your own jewelry designs, and will have flush-set stones into a sterling silver ring band.

Who This Class Is For

This workshop is ideal for intermediate metalsmiths who want to expand their stone-setting skills and add professional-quality flush-set gemstones to rings, pendants, earrings, and other jewelry designs.

Prerequisite: Beginning Metalsmithing (Metals I), Intro to Metalsmithing, or equivalent experience. Metals II or equivalent experience is strongly recommended.

Instruction is led by a professional metalsmith with over a decade of experience worksing as a fine jeweler. You'll learn industry-standard techniques, develop precision craftsmanship, and gain the confidence to incorporate advanced stone-setting methods into your own work.

Ages: 14+

Class Size: Minimum 3 students | Maximum 6 students

Materials Fee: Approximately $50–$60, payable at the beginning of class by cash, check, or Venmo. The materials kit includes:

• Cast sterling silver ring band (priced at current metal market value; estimated $40)
• Cubic zirconia stones
• Drill bits
• Flush-setting bur

Each student will work at their own fully equipped jeweler's bench. OptiVISOR magnifiers (up to 3x) are available to borrow. If you require higher magnification, please bring your own visor or magnification system.

Cancellation Policy

The last day to cancel for a refund or transfer is September 17, 2026. A $25 transfer fee applies to transferred registrations.

Instructor: Cheyenne Hughes:

Cheyenne is a Denver native who's been practicing jewelry making since 2009. Over that time he's been fortunate enough to have apprenticed under the accomplished jeweler/blacksmith Ira Sherman. That 6 year apprenticeship landed him a job as a bench jeweler working for platinum and gold expert John Sholl of J.F. Sholl Fine Jewelry in Littleton, CO.

Cheyenne is currently running his own jewelry studio in Denver where he offers casting and other jewelry production services to the general public as well as other jewelers.
