Get to know one of the most useful and versatile tools in the metalsmith’s studio—the butane micro torch. Whether you’re just beginning your metalsmithing journey or adding a new torch to your workspace, this class offers a thorough introduction to selecting, setting up, and safely using a butane torch with confidence.

Students will learn proper torch operation, fueling, and safety practices while working through guided, hands-on exercises. You’ll apply your new skills by creating balled wire headpins, forming and soldering jump rings, and fabricating a pair of sterling silver post earrings. This supportive, skill-focused class is designed to help you build a strong foundation and feel comfortable incorporating a butane torch into your practice.

Topics covered include:

  • Butane torch features and components

  • Appropriate uses and limitations

  • Personal and workspace safety

  • Fueling, ignition, and safe operation

  • Creating balled wire headpins

  • Forming and soldering jump rings

  • Fabricating sterling silver post earrings

Details:

  • Sunday, March 22 from 10:00-2:00
  • 4 contact hours, ages 14+ located at 100 E. Cleveland St Lafayette 80026
  • # students: 3 minimum, 6 maximum
  • Materials kit fee is $20. This fee is collected at the beginning of class via cash, check, or Venmo payable directly to Kathy.
  • Each student will work at their own dedicated jeweler's bench. 
  • Prerequisite: none

About the instructor, Kathy Pinover

Kathy is Inspired by the beauty of nature and the craftmanship of vintage and fine jewelry. She learned beading techniques through formal classes and studied metalsmithing at Clear Creek Academy of Jewelry and Metal Arts in Denver. She continues to build upon her skills at Silver Peak Studio. In 2004 she opened her business and since created nearly 2500 uniquely designed and handcrafted pieces sold in galleries, boutiques, shows and online. Her passion is creating handmade beaded chains to which she may add metal-smithed embellishments to create one of a kind artisan jewelry.
