An anticlastic form is a mono-shell (a single sheet of metal) whose axial and radial curves are oriented in opposite directions. An anticlastic form can never hold water, regardless of the position it is in. In this workshop the students will learn to make a basic but elegant silver anticlastic cuff. This cuff is the foundation of all anticlastic raising.

During class you will make a practice cuff in brass and then your second cuff in sterling silver.

We will cover:

  • Differences between anticlastic and synclastic
  • Metal selection
  • Tool selection
  • Forging metal
  • Bracelet sizing
  • Cuff bracelet shaping
  • Polishing

  • 8 contact hours, ages 14+ located at the Silver Peak Studio Classroom, 100.5 E. Cleveland St. Lafayette 80026
  • # students 3 minimum, 6 maximum
  • Materials kit fee: TBD based on metal market in August but will range from $60-$75. 
  • Tools: Please bring the following, you may order from Rio Grande (item numbers listed). Please order at least 2 weeks prior to start of class. 
  • Prerequisite: Metals 1, Intro to Metalsmithing, or equivalent. Metals 2 preferred or Beginning Metalsmithing (Metals 1 and 2)

About Travis Ogden: 

Travis Ogden headshot

Travis Ogden earned a BFA in Metal Art from the University of Texas at Austin and a Masters in Metal from Washington University, St. Louis, Mo. He taught the University of Colorado Continuing Education Metals courses from 1982-1985. He also taught Metalsmithing and Casting courses at Front Range Community College.

Travis has been making one of a kind jewelry for over 30 years. In 2003 he won the Niche Award for a pair of Sterling Silver Hollow Anticlastic Candlesticks. Travis was a Niche Award Finalist 2007 and a finalist for two different entries in two different categories in 2009.

Besides making jewelry, Travis loves to create bronze sculpture and other hollow anticlastic metal sculptures. Many of his pieces take several days or weeks to complete, due to the complexity of design and technical expertise he exhibits in his work.
