Hollow boxes are one of the essential, core components of my jewelry making. In
addition to building hollow forms that have volume, they can be combined with many
kinds of exterior components to add dimension and interest to jewelry pieces. In
conjunction with piercing, hollow box construction can be used to create shadow-boxes.
They can also be used to: fabricate lockets with hinges, create components in 2-part
clasps for necklaces or in a multitude of other ways. In this workshop we will explore
how think “outside the box” to fabricate hollow boxes and combine them with design
elements and attachments to create exciting and unusual pieces of jewelry in either
sterling silver or brass.

In this workshop students will learn about:

  • Designing hollow box jewelry pieces
  • How to form, bend and build box-side frames
  • How to use piercing to create shadowbox effects
  • The process of soldering frames to front and back panels
  • Creating attachments that can be combined with - and enhance the
    dimensionality of hollow boxes
  • How to cut apart and reassemble hollow box sections with additional frame walls
    to create entirely new constructions.
