Enameling 101 with a Kiln: September 7

Enameling is one of the most versatile tools an artist should have in their belt. From the glass dragonfly wings of art nouveau jewelers to the curving floral vessels of the cloisonne masters, glass enamel can provide near infinite options for adding color to your metal. In this class, students will take the very first step and learn how to fuse powdered enamel onto sawed copper. 

This class is a prerequisite for second level enameling courses such as champlevé, cloisonne, and graphite fusing.

At the end of class, you will make one sugar fired, one transparent over white, and one sgraffito sample based on demonstrations. 

We will cover:

• Selection of type of metal and enamels
• Cleaning metal for application
• How to apply enamels
• Kiln use  
• Differences of sugar coat, orange peel, perfect, and over-fired enamel
• Clean-up of metal

• Sunday, September 7 from 9:30-5:30  
• Class is held in the Silver Peak Studio Classroom located at 100.5 E. Cleveland St Lafayette 80026
• 8 contact hours, ages 14+
• # students: 3 minimum, 6 maximum
• Materials kit fee is $30 and includes metal, enamels, and findings. Chains for pendants are sold for an additional charge
• Each student will work at their own dedicated jeweler's bench. (No need to buy tools!)
• Prerequisite: none

Instructor: Dee Moore (They/Them)

Dee graduated with their BFA in Metals & Jewelry from the University of Wyoming in 2020 and now works as a goldsmith and bench jeweler at a fine jewelry store in Fort Collins. They hope to spread some of the knowledge they have acquired with the rest of their community to make metalsmithing techniques more accessible to artists of all backgrounds.
